OSFED Dietitian: Care for Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder

Not fitting neatly into one diagnosis doesn’t make your eating disorder less serious. As OSFED dietitians, we provide specialized care for Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder, with care shaped around your specific symptoms. We see clients in person in Austin and Round Rock, TX, and virtually across 17 states.

What Is OSFED?

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) is a diagnosis for eating disorders that cause significant distress or impairment but don’t meet the full criteria for anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. OSFED is one of the most common eating disorder diagnoses, and it carries medical and emotional risks similar to other eating disorders.

Because OSFED can look different from person to person, it is often misunderstood or dismissed. Early, specialized treatment helps keep symptoms from getting worse.

Common Types of OSFED

Examples include atypical anorexia nervosa; bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder of low frequency or limited duration; purging disorder, which involves purging without binge eating; and night eating syndrome, which involves eating after waking from sleep or eating a large share of daily food after dinner.

Signs and Symptoms of OSFED

  • Restricting food or following rigid food rules
  • Binge eating, even if it happens less often
  • Purging through vomiting, laxatives, or exercise
  • Eating mostly at night or waking up to eat
  • Intense focus on body shape, size, or weight
  • Frequent body checking or body avoidance
  • Mood changes, anxiety, or isolation around food
  • Dizziness, fatigue, or digestive issues

An OSFED diagnosis is not a “lesser” eating disorder. It qualifies for the same level of care and support.

Frequently Asked Questions About OSFED

Is OSFED a real eating disorder?

Yes. OSFED is a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR. It can be just as serious as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder.

What is the difference between OSFED and EDNOS?

EDNOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified) was the older term used before the DSM-5 was published in 2013. OSFED replaced it and includes more specific examples.

Can I see an OSFED dietitian without a therapist?

You can start with us. For the best outcomes, we usually recommend a team that includes a therapist and medical provider, and we can help with referrals.

Do you treat night eating syndrome and purging disorder?

Yes. Our dietitians treat all forms of OSFED, including atypical anorexia, purging disorder, and night eating syndrome.

Do you offer virtual OSFED treatment?

Yes. We offer virtual sessions in 17 states and in-person sessions in Austin and Round Rock, Texas.
